Message from the Ambassador

Using this website, the Embassy of Portugal in Stockholm wishes to welcome its visitors not only to an ancient nation but also to a new and modern country that, notwithstanding the present hardships, is striving to create the best conditions for its future and for the future of Europe, while aiming at continuing its active contribution to guarantee the maintenance of international peace and security.

Portugal is currently a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations and deems that it is essential to ensure the full legitimacy and subsequent normative authority of the multilateral system. Nowadays this system suffers from many vulnerabilities, a legacy with origins in the tragedies of the last century, errors whose repetition should be avoided.
As regards Europe, and strictly complying with the commitments made in order to overcome the present crisis, Portugal is pursuing a firm policy of fiscal consolidation, financial stabilization and structural reforms. Despite being a hard task, one whose main goal is to restore the country's external economic competitiveness, Portugal's performance has been receiving praises from its partners. Portugal intends to be, as it always has been, absolutely faithful to the agreements made with its partners but wishes, above all, to strengthen its foundations for future sustainability, while simultaneously contributing to world development and peace.

Portugal has been an independent nation-state for almost ten centuries and has had a strong global presence throughout its history – reflected by the fact that Portuguese is the sixth most spoken language in the world – and has hence gained a deep knowledge about the world's major issues. With that in mind, Portugal wants to contribute and follow through on the projection of the EU as a major political player, one which matches its economic weight, in favour of a good and balanced management of the new system of international relations being established these days.

Aside from providing information about Portugal, this website also has the objective of collecting the impressions of all of those who read it. The suggestions made by our visitors will be taken in due consideration to make this the window to the ancient nation and the new and modern country which I have the honour to represent in Sweden.
